Few years back, we had left our homes in pursuit of newer and bigger things, achievements we called them then, compulsions we may call them now, if so? But we left behind the lanes, that do not call us back.
We never knew we would leave those lanes (narrow howsoever they were) for broader pathways that are suffocating but not liberating enough like those. Those lanes gave us enough to make memories and these broadways take enough from us to recall those memories.
Today when we stand at almost No U turn zone and getup from time to time to look back and wave a hand just to realise that not even the time (of the past) recognises us now. There are insane shades of colours left in the imagery drawn in our heads – protecting us enough from the void that surrounds us all the time to gulp us down.

क्या उन्हें हमारी याद नहीं तरसाती

हम तो बस युहीं निकले थे पल दो पल के लिए

पलट कर देखा तो ढून्ढ लिए थे उन्होंने कईं नए साथी
पूछता हूँ खुद से तन्हाइयों में अक्सर
क्या उन्हें हमारी याद कभी नहीं तरसाती 
 
भागे थे उन गलियों में खोजने वो चोर रास्ते
वो अखियों से फिर कईं तीर लगाना 
और हवा के जैसे हम गुम से हो जाते 
अगले दिन अखियों का हमें वहां खींच के लाना
याद जो छू जाये ज़रा सी तो दिल हमारे आज भी धड़क जाते
 
कुछ गलियां हमें क्यों नहीं बुलाती 
क्या उन्हें हमारी याद नहीं तरसाती
 
बीता बचपन गोद में उनकी 
और वहीँ पे लगे जवानी के तड़के
भूली बिसरि बातें भी उनकी 
और वहीँ मिले सचाई के झटके
लाख कोशिशें करले शहर, कमी न पूरी होगी उनकी 
 
गजब सी गहरी है यारी हमारी
गिरते देखा, गिरकर उठना भी सिखाया 
दफ़न की इनमें हमने कहानिया सारी
पर इक मोड़, इक खड्डा भी हमें रोक न पाया 
जब आयी हमारी निकलने की बारी 
 
 
 
कुछ गलियां हमें क्यों नहीं बुलाती 
क्या उन्हें हमारी याद नहीं तरसाती
 
आज अर्सों हुए उन्हें आहट सुने हमारी
अर्सों हो गए हमें भी उनसे किये गुफ्तगू 
अब देती हैं दस्तक यादें ढेर सारी 
बीत गयी कईं रातें याद में उनकी 
जहाँ बुनी थी हमने अपने सपनों की गाडी 
 
तुम लौट के आना कल, बनके साथी 
शोर से अपने भर देना जो मन का घाव है हमारा
फिर वही रातें होंगी और बातें कईं सारी 
वादा है हमारा भूले से भी कदम न उठेगा हमारा
ठहाकों से गूंजेंगी फिर वह गलियां सारी
